How to Make an Easter Morning Surprise for a Crawler

This time two years ago was my son’s first Easter. He was 9 months old, crawling and curious. I’d been so excited for the milestones of his first holidays, but I really wanted him to be able to explore and enjoy his first Easter, as a much as a baby can.

Growing up I remember waking up to Easter Baskets exploding with eggs and small gifts. I have two siblings so there was so much joy and excitement that came with getting out of bed Easter morning and running into the dining room where they were always displayed. My goal was to create that same experience, but baby-sized.

And that’s how the concept of what I like to call the Deconstructed Easter Basket was born. This allowed my baby to experience something new and exciting, new textures and colors, but on his level so he could crawl over to it and pick up everything and chew on everything.

To start I laid Easter grass across a small portion of the floor, enough to be a pop of color that was impossible to miss, and just enough to lay toys throughout. When my son began his journey across his Easter surprise he would first encounter the book, “Guess How Much I Love You” along with the paired bunny. This was a beloved book from my childhood and the bunny was super fitting for Easter.

Next he would encounter a set of eggs in a carton that match shapes at the bottom to fit into the carton, have emotions, and when opened make squeaking sounds. These were age appropriate for him to explore and listen to and chew on without being a choking hazard, and have grown with him to now being a fun matching toy at age 2.

Next I added a stack of Easter Egg stacking cups that are colorful, cute, and have also grown with my little boy. They are made to look like broken egg shells, they are soft plastic and were chewed on before they were stacked. Because they were eggs, they were very fitting for Easter.

The final touches were his Easter basket filled with big colorful easter eggs and one book, “Bluey, Hurray It’s Easter“. Throughout the grass I placed small easter eggs with faces and a couple of egg shaped bath toys (found in Target’s $5 section) to make sure he had plenty of things to pick up and explore.

This was a super fun and fitting Easter. We got so much joy from watching him barrel through his deconstructed Easter basket. To make it simpler, I’ve compiled a list of supplies and toys I used for baby’s first Easter.
