Vintage Rainbow Budget Birthday Party

Today I’m doing a throwback of one of my first ever join-venture birthday parties. I had just moved into a new house and had very little furniture, which was perfect for hosting a small 1st birthday party as it looked more like an empty venue than a home.

It was my nephew’s first birthday and his mom wanted the party to be a rainbow theme to match his vintage-rainbow nursery. We also had a very limited budget and very limited experience at the time of this party, so this is a very beginning and budget- friendly setup.

Starting with the focal point- a rainbow streamer display behind the food table. For this we simply used 6 colors of streamers, taping them side-by-side one at a time to the top of the window and cutting at a length just below the top of the table. We used generic white balloons and blew them up manually- tying 2 together each and then tying them into a group with fishing line. We used command hooks to tie the balloons up to the top of the window on each end and cut the excess.

We used a grey plastic tablecloth for the table and used plates, napkins, and plastic cutlery in the rainbow colors. For food we served a tray of fruit with one type of fruit per color, and a veggie tray with the same concept. We dipped marshmallows in food dye and sprinkles (2 of each color) and made simple cake pops (no stick) with each color drizzled on top. For the rest of the food we didn’t follow a theme, and got simple popular kids snacks and a cake from ‘Nothing Bundt Cake’.

Sodas, waters, and juice was served lined up by color, and goodie bags were prepared in bags of each color of the rainbow. We displayed a rainbow pinata that we filled, and then used as a party activity later. For the high chair for the birthday boy we taped a simple rainbow colored tassel across and when the cake smash moment came- we set the high chair on a star printed splash-mat.

My house is an open concept, so the kitchen island that separates the dining room from the living room had to be included in the decoration. We strung a simple rainbow garland across the length of it, and added a custom name- garland in the middle.

In the living room we setup a foldable table, my coffee table, and my side table and covered each with a grey tablecloth. We taped a streamer of each color side by side in the middle of each table as a table runner and setup all the foldable chairs we had at the tables and around the room.

We strung 2 strings of rainbow garland up on the windows and created a rainbow on the mantle using paper pom poms, balloons, and tape.

Lastly we hung a final garland over the tv and added the extra pom poms.

This party rung in at about $200 for decorations and as seen above, the food was kept simple as well. This is a clean, simple, budget and beginner friendly party that was SO pretty and fun! I hope if you are looking for ideas that this inspires you in some way!
